Perception: Fact or Fiction

December 4, 2018

This quote really spoke to me today: " Studies have shown that 90% of error in thinking is due to error in perception. If you can change your perception you can change your emotion and this can lead to new ideas. "
Edward de Bono

Perception is important and underpins everything we think, do, believe, know, love, or disagree about. So what is perception?

Perception defined: The ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses; A way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental impression.

The brain is constantly making meaning out of everything we see, hear, feel, taste, and touch. Leon Festinger states "we form our beliefs based on what comes to us from the world through the window of perception, but then those beliefs act like a lens, focusing on what they want to see."

An illusion is proof that you don't always see what you think you do because of the way your brain perceives an interprets the information.

Remember the illusion that went around several years ago?

Why did this illusion go viral?

Because it was disturbing that something as basic as color became a source of disagreement and conflict.

People were passionate about their perceptions; they were willing to fight each other over them.

So two people can look at the same event and it is possible to have two different perceptions based on their assumptions, expectations, experience and history. Our brains fill in the gaps of missing information for us automatically.

How do we manage that kind of passionate conflict when it occurs?

One has to be curious. When you are curious, no one gets furious.

We need to be open to understanding how the other perceives the situation and adjust our own perceptions when we receive new information.

When we humbly approach the situation with the understanding that we may be missing something, we are on the way to manage conflict.

What ways has your perception lead you astray?
