My clients have been reaching out about how to manage the stress of homeschooling when they also must work at home.
I'd like to explore some possible solutions with you during this short post as well as invite your own solutions and discoveries.
👨👩👧👦If your kids are school-aged and need your assistance, it possible that you will need to adjust many of your routines.
Many have discovered the following tips:
✔️Get up earlier and use the time while the kids are sleeping to get your creative work done. This is the work that requires the most mental energy. Do it first! Do it before you look at emails or do any home chores!
✔️Plan out your important projects for this early morning block on Sunday night. Put them in your schedule. These projects are non-negotiable.
✔️Is it possible for you and your spouse to take shifts? Morning and afternoon?
✔️Have a team meeting with your family. Make a plan: door closed/sign up do not enter unless bleeding! 😂 Find a plan that works for everyone, that is reasonable and age-appropriate.
✔️Have a notebook available for them to write down all questions until you are available at a designated time.
✔️Break up your work into blocks and tend to the kids in between those blocks.
👨👩👧👦College Kids who have returned home:
✔️Do NOTHING. They have been living at college and figuring it out; there is no need for you to jump in now.
✔️Let them figure out their own work schedule. Resist the urge to jump back into the driver's seat!
✔️Offer emotional support. Listen. Do not lecture.
✔️Be respectful if their way of doing school is different than yours. As long as they are getting the work done, it's not a battle to take on.
Our goal as parents in the pandemic is to get the work done to the best of our ability; get out of this situation healthy, grow stronger as a family, and be gracious to ourselves and others.
What tips do you have for your fellow parents?
