Routine: good or bad?

Do you see routine as a help or a hindrance?

For me, at times, routines are a hindrance if I am not willing to be flexible. For example, I wake up every morning and do the same thing every day. I have a routine that I don't like to disrupt.

Why is it that disrupting this routine irritates me? Our routines bring with it certainty, and our brains love certainty. When we have certainty in our lives, it takes less energy to live them. When there is uncertainty, it seems like a drain to our system.

Routines can be helpful in sports. When you have a routine in sports, like a pre-shot routine in golf, it frees up your mind to concentrate and focus on the task at hand without thinking about the all the details necessary to perform with precision.
